About the Communications and Marketing Department:
The Communications and Marketing Department has many responsibilities, but two key functions:
Lead organizational efforts to position the Institute, and create compelling narratives in support of the organization’s mission and goals
Serve as the in-house agency that provides communications and marketing support to the Institute’s 30+ programs and public events
The Department is responsible for:
Marketing and branding
Media relations and PR
A print magazine and other print communications
An A/V and conference services unit
Support for executive communications (talking points, op-eds, and other materials, in collaboration with President’s office)
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Write front-end code to creatively present the work of the Aspen Institute in web and mobile products.
Enhance existing online business processes by improving user experience, functionality, and design.
Plan and manage vendor relationships related to web architecture, hosting, and security operations.
Review the work of external vendors – maintaining consistent style, code, and user experience across Institute digital properties.
Develop and maintain guidelines for vendors using shared Institute hosting resources.
Work closely with digital production staff and the Director of Digital Strategy to identify, test, and develop new website capabilities that answer challenges or present opportunities to the Institute.
Manage web-based tools used internally and externally by the Communications Department.
Oversee domain name assets and manage DNS for public-facing properties.
Administer the Aspen Institute GitHub account including open source and private repos.
Plan training opportunities to strengthen technical skills of Institute colleagues.
Regular interaction with the Manager, Digital Production and Director of Digital Strategy, other Communications and Marketing Department staff, and other producers of digital content throughout the organization. Routine communication with appropriate external vendors.
Knowledge, Education, and Experience:
Exceptional ability to communicate technical concepts to less-technical colleagues.
Extensive knowledge of HTML and CSS.
Experience with Git and version control concepts.
Experience with PHP.
Knowledge of common web design tools including Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.
Ability to create a functional web experience from a design mockup.
Experience creating custom themes for WordPress.
Experience designing visually appealing presentations for large amounts of data.
Experience styling web experiences for mobile devices.
Experience testing and altering web projects for broad usability and speedy delivery.
Familiarity with SEO best practices and tools for sharing metadata.
Basic understanding of back-end development, systems architecture, hosting, content delivery, caching, security, and other technologies critical to the deployment of web projects and mobile applications.
Basic familiarity with the iOS and/or Android application development process.
Strong visual, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
Ability to work as part of a creative technical team.
Bachelor’s degree and at least 2 years of relevant experience.
Demonstrated interest in the broad array of topics reflected by Aspen Institute digital content.
Level of Authority:
No supervisory authority.
No budgetary authority.
Reports to the Director of Digital Strategy.
