The Research Scientist – Associate for Policy & Effectiveness focuses on connecting and improving school quality and learner environments to impact student outcomes through reliable and valid measurement and actionable reporting, supported by empirical research. Under the guidance of more senior staff, integrates and interprets varied data sources from students, schools, districts, and states in support of their continuous improvement and accountability requirements. Guides and designs the analyses, visualizations, and reports that drive knowledge generation, sharing, and decision-making by educators and administrators to affect organizational changes in response to local, state, and federal policies. As a member of the Research and Analytics team, the Research Scientist – Associate works closely with data analysts and researchers, collaborates with colleagues in Software Development, Product Management, and Marketing, and builds relationships with education administrators across the country. Reports to the Director of Research and Analytics. Additional responsibilities include the following:
Policy & Research
Develop and maintain expertise in school improvement and continuous improvement practices.
Track federal and state education-related legislative activity; build 50-state databases.
Partner with other Research Scientists to define and interpret statistical models.
Convey complex data via visual techniques to succinctly communicate for decision-making and storytelling.
Assist in the development of data priorities around the identification, collection, and presentation of continuous improvement and accountability data in education (student, teacher, school, district, and state-level).
Partner with the Software Development team to structure the way we collect, organize, store, and manage data in support of key strategic goals.
Collaborate with Product Management to design and produce reports and visualizations that support education stakeholders at the school, district, and state-level.
Provide an informed picture of relevant data, analyses, and findings that help improve the use and application of research-informed decisions on connecting school quality and learner environments with student outcomes.
Analyze education data to write relevant, concise reports and memos that inform internal educational research initiatives.
Write policy briefs and respond to requests for information from internal and external audiences as needed with guidance from more senior researchers.
Support reporting and disseminate research information and findings to both internal and external stakeholders.
Master’s degree in public policy, education, measurement/psychometrics, or other related discipline is required.
Three (3) to five (5) years of experience (K-12 classroom teacher, administrator, central office staff, local/state education agency, educational consultant, or other related experience) is required; or Ph.D. in related discipline (in lieu of required experience).
Must have experience organizing and managing robust data, conducting analysis, and displaying information in ways that drive organizational decisions.
Experience working with state education agencies and/or statistical software packages (e.g., R, SAS, SQL) is strongly desired.
